This project consisted of a relatively small rear addition to and the complete interior remodeling of a ca. 1815 row house in Old Town Alexandria, VA. The original house was a relatively small side hall row dwelling, two stories high and two rooms deep. Moved to its present site in the mid-1970's, the house had been enlarged several times prior to this project. Historic preservation easements prohibited any alterations to the original structure, so from the exterior, the only evidence of any work was a relatively small extension off the rear.
The owner wanted a structure that would be a stylistically consistent background for a significant collection of 18th and 19th century furnishings. Accordingly, no expense was spared to ensure that the level of detail for the interior was equal to the collection it would house. Details were drawn from a variety of precedents, but all sharing a common classical heritage.
