Dupont Townhouse

Dupont Townhouse
Washington, DC

This project consisted of a substantial remodeling of and addition to an existing row house in Dupont Circle. The original house was a fairly typical two-story row dwelling three rooms deep with a side stair. As with most houses of this type the rear-facing room was slightly narrower in order to allow a window into the middle room. The project program called for the enlargement of the kitchen as well as the addition of a breakfast room and powder room on the first floor. The program for the second floor included a master bedroom and bath to replace the very small office above the existing kitchen.

Because the owners did not intend to use the middle room upstairs as a bedroom, the rear-facing window was no longer required programmatically. This permitted the addition to extend the full width of the lot which allowed for a much more generous kitchen and master bedroom with minimal encroachment on the rear yard.

This in turn provided a rare opportunity to create a considerably more architecturally refined rear facade.
